Head of AI / Lead AI Research Engineer | DeepTech | Defence & Autonomy | London (Hybrid)

A pioneering deep-tech company is building the foundational software and AI that will power the next generation of autonomous systems — from intelligent sensors to robotics and decision-making platforms. Backed by leading investors and driven by a world-class technical team, they’re on a mission to redefine how AI can be safely and effectively deployed in high-impact, real-world environments.

This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of an emerging AI function within a rapidly scaling organisation tackling some of the hardest challenges in autonomy, perception, and intelligent systems.

The Role

As Head of AI, you’ll lead the development and delivery of the company’s AI strategy — spanning perception, control, multi-modal data fusion, and applied machine learning. You’ll guide a talented team of engineers and researchers, help shape the roadmap for intelligent autonomy, and personally contribute to the design and implementation of AI models across both software and edge environments.

You’ll work closely with the founding team and product leads to build an AI capability that blends cutting-edge research with robust, production-grade engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a high-performing AI research and engineering team

  • Design and implement end-to-end AI solutions — from data acquisition to deployment

  • Integrate ML models into both enterprise systems and resource-constrained hardware

  • Define technical direction, tooling, and best practices across AI development

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with robotics, systems, and software teams

  • Ensure responsible, explainable, and ethical use of AI across applications

About You

  • MSc or PhD in AI, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or related field

  • Proven experience building and managing high-calibre AI teams

  • 5+ years’ experience applying ML to complex real-world systems (e.g. perception, control, vision-language, planning, sensor fusion)

  • Proficient in Python and at least one other language (C++, Rust, or Java)

  • Strong understanding of AI architecture, data pipelines, and model deployment (MLOps, edge AI, simulation, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate research into practical engineering impact

Bonus Points For

  • Research publications in top-tier ML or robotics conferences (NeurIPS, CVPR, ICRA, ICLR, etc.)

  • Experience with simulation, synthetic data generation, or autonomous systems

  • Background in deploying AI in safety-critical or regulated environments

  • Understanding of real-time, resource-constrained ML deployment

What’s on Offer

  • Competitive base salary

  • Meaningful equity in a well-funded, mission-driven startup

  • 7%+ pension contribution

  • Private medical and dental insurance

  • Daily lunch and team socials

  • Relocation support

  • Hybrid setup with a collaborative in-office culture (London HQ)
