A DFT (Design for Test) Engineer is responsible for ensuring that integrated circuits (ICs) and semiconductor devices can be efficiently and thoroughly tested during and after manufacturing.

Their work is essential to identifying faults, verifying functionality, and improving the overall reliability of hardware products.
 
In the semiconductor and electronics industries, DFT engineers design and implement test structures within a chip’s architecture that enable automated testing. These structures make it possible to detect manufacturing defects and ensure that devices perform correctly under various conditions before they are shipped to customers.
 
DFT engineers are typically involved in scan insertion, boundary scan, built-in self-test (BIST), and test pattern generation. They work closely with design, verification, and silicon validation teams to integrate testability features without compromising performance or power consumption.
 
To excel in this role, a DFT engineer needs strong digital design skills, experience with hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, and familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools such as Synopsys, Cadence, or Mentor Graphics. They also require a solid understanding of chip architecture, logic synthesis, and timing analysis.
 
The role of a DFT engineer is critical to reducing time to market, minimising production costs, and ensuring the quality of complex semiconductor products used in consumer electronics, automotive systems, and advanced computing.
